Home Sweet Home

Well, I have great news. I have been assigned to a dorm in Vienna. So, now you can all check out where I will be living. I will be in a double room in a dorm for students called Schäffergasse just a few blocks from my school. Click here for a map of the location. I am very excited to be living here because it is very close to the Naschmarkt, Vienna’s colorful oldest outdoor market. I found this video on YouTube featuring photos from Naschmarkt (If my computer skills have failed me and the embedding doesn’t work, you can click on this link to see the video

My dorm is also close to the Secession, the exhibition hall for Avant-Garde artists at the turn of the century, such as Gustav Klimt.

Gustav Klimt, The Kiss, 1907-1908.

Gustav Klimt, The Kiss, 1907-1908.

My dorm is also close to the popular 5th district nightlife around Schleifmuehlgasse and to the Opera House.  I’ll let you know if I end up seeing any shows at the Opera!

I recently received an email from my good friend Olivia. She just left this week to spend a few months in India. She has arrived safely and is experiencing a bit of culture shock, but is excited to be starting her journey in the (humid) city of Delhi!

Well, that is all for today. My tasks in the next few weeks are to nurse this cold I caught, write my paper, get my Italian study visa, and visit with my friends and family before I go. Hope to hear from you soon!

Where & When and a chance to say Goodbye

Hello everyone! Thank you for visiting my site! I have created this blog so that my friends and family can read about my adventures in Europe. Whenever we miss each other we can visit this site to stay in contact. If you get a username with, you can comment on my entries and take polls. Please leave suggestions for ways to reorganize my site or for things you would like me to write about.

For my first entry, I would like to tell you a little bit about my plans. See my Travel page for specific dates and locations.

Where: Vienna, Austria

When: April 2009- June 2009

Why: I need to learn German for Art History graduate school, so I applied for the University Germanics department Spring in Vienna program. I will be attending the International Culture Institute across the street from the Opera House in downtown Vienna. Click here to see a map of the location. I will be taking German language classes at IKI, as it is called in German, an Art History course taught by the infamous Dr. O, and a Cultural Studies course focused on the Americanization of Vienna in the 20th Century. We will also be taking a field trip to Prague, Czech Republic in June.

Where: Rome, Italy

When: July 17, 2009- mid-July 2010

Why: I will be the intern at the Palazzo Pio, the University of Washington’s campus in Rome. Click here to see a map of the location. I will be working as the office assistant to the University staff and doing research for my honors thesis, which is due in Spring 2010.  I will be doing research on a sculpture called the Relief of the Dacians that is believed to be ancient and part of the Great Trajanic Frieze. However, I think it is a forgery and I will be trying to estimate its date of creation and its maker. See a photo of this on my Research page.

I would love to see all of you before I leave. I only have 17 days left, so please contact me ASAP.

California friends and family: I am flying down for the weekend after my German final to visit with you. I arrive in the evening on Saturday, March 14, 2009. On Sunday, March 15, 2009 my parents will be hosting a drop-in get-together from 12:00- 6:00 pm. We will be offering hors d’ouevres and a chance for friends and family to catch up before I leave the country. Feel free to give me 916-716-0873 or my parents 916-933-0873 if you need directions. Please RSVP by taking the poll below or giving us a call. Hope to see you there. I will be returning to Seattle in the evening on Monday, March 16.

Washington friends: My flight leaves in the evening on Thursday, March 19, 2009. Let’s make an effort to see one another before then! I plan on cooking a good Irish dinner on Saint Patrick’s Day, Tuesday, March 17, 2009 and opening my tiny home to friends with a hearty appetite who would like a chance to say our goodbyes. If this day won’t work for you, shoot me a line and we will work something out. Please RSVP by taking the poll below.

Well, I think that is all for my first entry. Here’s hoping I keep up with the site!
